History
1954 - Moonya started as a result of a public
meeting. The first permanent venue was opened with
6 children and 1 teacher.
1970 - Moonya became a regional centre that
included Korumburra, Phillip Island and Leongatha.
The centre had 16 children, a qualified teacher and
an assistant.
1976 - The Murray Street building that now houses
the Pre School was opened with a client base of 35
trainees.
1979 - Trainee intake was now 36. The committee
was anxious to provide proper facilities to meet the
needs of both children and adults. The original
building was to be the school section and a new
purpose built unit (Adult Activity Unit) would be built
alongside to meet the needs of adults.
1981 - The new Adult Activity Unit was opened
designed to be able to cater for up to 60 adults. At
this time the Adult Unit had a total of 23 clients with 3
staff including the supervisor and the school section
had 17 children with 5 staff including the Principal.
Moonya had 3 buses with drivers and chaperons, a
full time cleaner, part time gardener and a part time
Administrator.
1992 - With school enrolment reducing the school
section of Moonya was closed and remaining
children entered mainstream education with the
assistance of Integration Aides as was government
policy, then and now. The Adult Training Unit
continued to provide programs to meet the needs of
its clients.
1993 - The Home Maintenance Team was
introduced to provide supported employment skills to
our clients many of whom are now totally
independent.
1993 - Bits'n'Pieces was established as a retail outlet
to provide work experience and training.
1995 - Printon (formerly Bits'n'Pieces) was
established to provide further supported employment
skills in heat press printing.
1996 - South Coast Employment Services was
introduced to provide skill training and assist clients
enter the open employment market.
2005 - Moonya rebranded its two business services.
The Home Maintenance Team became Moonya
Gardening Services. Printon became Moonya Digital
Printing.
2008 - Saw the kindergarten move out of its current
location to make room for a refurbishment of the
building. This was done to make room for
administration offices, training room and Moonya
Digital Printing. A new demountable was also placed
on site to allow South Coast Employment Services to
move from their current location in Watt street.
2009 - Moonya Digital Printing and South Coast
Employment Services moved into their new locations.
Moonya Digital Printing moved into the new
refurbished space in building B and South Coast
Employment Services moved into the demountable
office space called building A.
2010 - Moonya Incorporated changed its name to
bring all of its services together under the one
banner. Its new name is now Moonya Community
Services Inc.
2010 - With the success of Moonya Digital Printing
and the changes and demands from it customers,
Moonya Digital Printing was no longer just providing
a digital printing service. With the expansion of the
services to customers it was decided that a re-
branding of the business was needed. MOONYA
PRINTWORKZ is know the new name for the
business that better describes what services they
have to offer.
2010 - This has been a very busy time for Moonya
with the name Change to Moonya Community
Services Inc. and the rebranding of one of its
business services. This year also saw the change of
CEO. Doug Wain was the CEO of Moonya from 2006 to
2010. The CEO position is now being filled by
Bernard Hanily. Moonya Community Services Inc.
